Grind Guide: Match Your Brew Method to the Right Grind
Which Grind Is Right for Your Brew?
When you order from Kind Grinds, you'll see three grind options: MED, COARSE, and WHOLE. Here's exactly what each one means and which brewing method it's made for.
Brew Method → Grind Quick-Reference
| Brew Method | Recommended Grind | What to Order |
|---|---|---|
| ☕ Espresso Machine | Fine | Order WHOLE + grind fine at home, or request fine grind at checkout notes* |
| 🫖 Moka Pot | Fine–Medium | Order WHOLE or MED |
| ☕ Drip Coffee Maker | Medium | Order MED |
| 🫗 Pour-Over (V60, Chemex) | Medium | Order MED |
| 🧴 French Press | Coarse | Order COARSE |
| 🧊 Cold Brew | Coarse | Order COARSE |
*We currently offer MED and COARSE pre-ground. For espresso-fine grind, we recommend ordering WHOLE BEAN and grinding fresh for best results.
What Do MED, COARSE & WHOLE Mean?
- MED (Medium Grind) — Pre-ground to a medium texture, similar to coarse sand. Ideal for drip machines and pour-over brewers where water passes through a filter at a moderate pace. This is the most versatile grind for everyday brewing.
- COARSE (Coarse Grind) — Pre-ground to a rough, chunky texture, similar to breadcrumbs. Best for slow-extraction methods like French press and cold brew where grounds steep directly in water for an extended time.
- WHOLE (Whole Bean) — Beans arrive unground so you can grind them fresh at home to any size you need. This is the best choice for espresso drinkers and anyone who wants maximum flavour and aroma from their coffee.
Taste Troubleshooting
Grind size has a big impact on flavour. Here's a quick guide if your cup doesn't taste right:
- Tastes bitter or burnt? Your grind may be too fine — the water is extracting too much from the grounds. Try a coarser grind or reduce your brew time.
- Tastes sour, weak, or watery? Your grind may be too coarse — the water is passing through too quickly and under-extracting. Try a finer grind or extend your brew time.
- Tastes just right? You've found your sweet spot. Stick with it!
